WordPress the movie
Don McAllister creates the most excellent ScreenCastsOnline Shows. Number 55 offers a special treat: SCO0055 - WordPress Blogging Tool.
I downloaded the hi-def version of the screencast. The full length hi-def show is about 120Mb and plays for 35 minutes. There are also versions with smaller playing and file sizes. As a subscriber, I get extra content, but a free version of the show includes about two thirds of the content, or pay a one-off fee of US$1.99 for the one show.
This screencast takes you through the various options for setting up Wordpress from the simple hosted solution through to the seemingly scary (but not really!) manual installation (available in the Extra! section) on a remote Linux server using both cPanel and unassisted.
It also covers using a third party hosting provider and gives an example of using ScreenCastsOnlines own hosting provider — SiteGround. The installation includes configuring an FTP client (Cyberduck) to upload files to the remote service.
If you haven’t used or installed WordPress before it’s a great introduction, and then of course you can refer to our book for extra help and to take you on from the simple beginnings of the video. I think the video and our book are nicely complementary.
